Avry closed the door as he left Dain, shaking his head slightly as he stationed himself by the controls. The hall was quiet, with the usual contingent of guards and a few others added with the alert. After reading the report on how easily Logue had gotten into the Royal Quarters, and the dressing down every guard in the Palace had gotten from the highest rank to the lowest, they were all on edge.
And needed to be, he thought. Even with Boralâs training, many of them hadnât expected to encounter the near chaos the Palace operated under. He wondered when his job wouldnât be so continuously life threatening. Avry smirked at that. As long as he was Dain Telaerinâs guard, he had a feeling it would be a long time.
He scanned the hall, listening to the usual sounds. The dinner hour. Also since Logueâs attack, their meal schedule had been altered. No longer would the guards eat while the Royals dined, but either before, or after. Sometimes not at all, he thought, having not eaten since breakfast. He ignored the gnawing of his stomach, and a few aches and pains, and settled to his watch.
Not long later, he heard Ralionâs voice, and then Genealâs, as they came out from the guard station, still discussing the medic station. They both glanced over at him, and paused a fraction before going on. Geneal smiled around her words, and Ralion was soon shaking his head. Avry realized that some wager was won. Geneal held out her hand. She received a few coins and a kiss she hadnât expected.
Avry averted his gaze, rolling his eyes slightly, but he smiled as he went back to studying the other end of the hall. By the time he got back around to them, theyâd returned to talking about the medic station. He rolled his eyes at that too.
The main door lock opened and the latch turned. It was a big one so it made a lot of noise, jarring the silence of the hall. Jarrid Rohn entered, and Avry straightened. Two other guards preceded Prince Dynan and Lord Chancellor Talryn followed, holding the Princeâs arm. Marc walked with his eyes down, and his other hand held in a tight fist behind his back. He was shaking his head while Dynan was trying to convince him of something. They stopped just inside the door, talking back and forth. The Prince relented after listening for a moment, and the conversation ended when Dynan looked over to his rooms. His expression changed and he started shaking his head, turning back to the Lord Chancellor.
The rest was lost to peripheral vision as Avry scanned back the opposite direction. They were laughing about something next he saw, a rarity lately, making him wonder what they found amusing. If those two men could laugh, then things were right with the world. At least for that instant in time, he amended, and continued watching. Every other guard, including the First Minister and Dr. Elger, were doing the same thing.
